Winter’s barely started. But for many of us in New England, it’s already overstayed its welcome.
If you’re not the sort who skis, skates or snowboards, the darkest season of the year doesn’t hold that much allure. Or any allure at all, really.
The good news? Those of us who (strongly) prefer the non-winter months are only an epic road trip away from warmer, gentler environs. All we need is a destination, determination and a 15-passenger van rental from Providence, RI to pack friends or family into.
After all, if we’re going to have the time of our lives somewhere, we’re not going to do it alone.
South Beach, Key West
Florida
The southernmost point of the continental U.S. and only 90 miles from Cuba, South Beach offers beach bums and adventurers alike a getaway for the ages. It’s 200 feet of stunning shoreline within short walking distance to shops, restaurants and bars.
If you’re looking to do more than just work on your tan, you can snorkel around reefs and wrecks, take a water tour by kayak or catamaran, or take a ferry to Dry Tortugas National Park, where you can check out historic Fort Jefferson—one of the largest coastal forts ever built.
Whatever your itinerary, you’re in for a memorable—and summery—time.
Yuma
Arizona
Named by the Guinness World Records as the Sunniest City on Earth—there’s no such thing as winter in Yuma.
From its historic downtown district to the surrounding Sonoran Desert to the waters of the mighty Colorado River, there’s more to do than you’ll have time for.
Go high-speed boating or jet-skiing, hike, or camp in one of Yuma’s national wildlife refuges hit the dunes on at ATV, or try your luck at one of the city’s three casinos.
There’s no shortage of activities—and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the warm weather without exerting a whole lot of physical effort. Museums, art galleries, restaurants, and outdoor markets all offer low-key fun in a warm, sunny setting.
Savannah
Georgia
With cool evening breezes and daytime temps hovering in the 60’s, winter in Savannah is tailor-made for a warm reprieve from the cold and snow and a fun road trip distance from Providence, Rhode Island if you’re packing everybody into a 15 passenger van rental.
Into history? Check out Old Fort Jackson, Fort Pulaski National Monument or Bonaventure Cemetery—103 acres of curving pathways, trees and grassy areas first opened in 1846.
Feeling outdoorsy? Kayak down a scenic river, take a dolphin tour off Tybee Island or just park yourself under a shady tree in one of the city’s 22 historic squares.
Just want to hang out? Take in a live show at one of the city’s many bars and cafes, admire the architecture as you stroll through the 50-block Victorian District or check out City Market—which has been the heart and historic center of Savannah for centuries.
Wherever your quest for non-winter weather takes you, make sure you bring a solid crew, all the gear you’ll need and a healthy appetite for new experiences.
Oh, and don’t forget a 15-passenger van. Because you’ll need to get there in comfort.
Rent a 15-passenger van to make every mile of the journey something to remember.
