Rental vans and cars age limits: A complete guide

School is almost finished for the year and your friends are ready to shut the books and head out for an adventure. Maybe you’ve got an unforgettable cross-country road trip mapped out, or perhaps a trip to Disney World. The only thing left on the to-do list is to rent a car or passenger van. You might be asking yourself: “How old do you have to be to rent a car?”

The minimum age to rent a car in the USA starts at 18, but can vary depending on the state. Some companies may request additional fees and extra paperwork as well. Read on to find out what to expect when renting a car or van as a young driver.

So, how old do you have to be to rent a car or van?

When renting a car or van, young drivers may face restrictions on types of vehicles available to them, including specialty vehicles, passenger vans, or full-size or premium SUVs. So, be sure to check directly with the company when securing your ride.

In relation to the legalities of renting a car in the United States, it varies by state. To rent a car or van in New York and Michigan, you have to be at least 18 years old. In most other states, you have to be 21. The majority of companies will apply a young driver surcharge to any driver under the age of 25.

On the other hand, Greenvans allows drivers 21 and over to drive our 15 passenger vans with no additional underage driver charge. Nobody under 21 years old is allowed to drive our vans for both legal and safety reasons.

What is a young driver surcharge?

A young driver surcharge, also known as an underage driver fee or young renter fee, is an additional amount charged by car and van rental agencies to drivers typically under 25 years of age. This fee is separate from the cost of the car or van rental itself. Its intent is to cover the higher risk incurred when renting to a younger and less experienced driver.

What “higher risk”? Well, statistical data shows that younger drivers are more likely to be involved in accidents and make insurance claims, which tend to be more costly for rental companies. The surcharge will vary based on the company, the rental location, and the driver’s age. Usually, it is a daily fee that ranges between $10 to $30.

Can you avoid the young driver surcharge?

The young driver surcharge can be avoided in the case of military personnel, AAA membership, or government employment. You can also check with the young driver’s employer or university to see if there is a corporate relationship that might forgo the charge.

Additionally, some rental companies, like Greenvans in particular, have waived the charge completely.
